The state of creativity in a world of AI

Where should a designer stand when it comes to AI?

So the question is, are designers defunct? Has creativity Died? I'm here to say that those things are far from true. Understanding what AI is to begin with is what will help answer this question. AI is a learning model that is trained on data, and really not much else.

The artificial intelligence only knows what is given to it, and even in a setting where an AI model is optimized to produce a visual asset, it is impossible for an AI to experience humanity and use it as leverage for what it generates. Taking into consideration emotions, mood, day to day small experiences in which one can find insight and transform that into a creative execution is something that will always need a human.

Now - does that mean all AI is bad? The answer to that might be a surprising no. AI that takes care of all of the tedious busywork-like parts of the creative process is the real goldmine of AI. Think of border expansion on photos that might have been cropped a bit too close, research, even auto layout. A massive example of this non-generative AI timesaving is 3D model rigging. Rigging a 3D model is one of those things that historically has been a very tedious process that consumes a lot of time, but with ample training AI can do it almost instantly. Currently, the AI is able to rig models half decently, and people that know how to rig by hand go in and finish the job, so it's not perfect.

To my fellow creatives out there, I say do not stop creating. Don't fall for the idea that the heart we put into our work is becoming worthless due to AI. We will continue to move forward, and in due time it will be clear what AI can do for us creatives, not against us.
